Movement as Culture: Dance in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Diaspora

Interactive Timeline

The timeline above builds upon the noted findings in the graph in the previous page, by laying out significant events related to Indian migration to the Arabian Gulf region, the consumption of Bollywood content in the Middle East, and the incorporation of a belly dancing aesthetic in Bollywood dance sequences. The timeline begins with the aforementioned oil boom of the 1970s that propelled Indian labor migration to the Arab states of the Persian Gulf and began the prolonged growth of the Indian diaspora depicted in the trend graphs.

By laying out all these events on the same timeline, I hope to make evident the temporal correlation between the rising Indian migrant presence in the Middle East and appearance of a belly dancing aesthetic in Bollywood dance productions.
