Biographies


Denise Johnson is a Lecuter in Art History at Chapman University, where she has taught since 2014. She earned a BA in Art and Psychology from UC Riverside and an MFA from Cal Arts with a focus in contemporary art theory and women's contributions to the western tradition. She is currently working on a doctoral degree in Cultural Studies at Claremont Graduate University.

Denise has taught all periods of western art history from the prehistoric era to the present, including: Black Subjects in White Art History; Gender, Art, and Western Culture; the history of photography; and the art of the ancient Americas along with studio courses in black-and-white photography and drawing. In addition to Chapman University, she has taught at Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State San Bernardino, Fullerton College, Chaffey College, Nuview High School, and Mt. San Jacinto College.

In addition to teaching, Denise has curated a number of contemporary art exhibitions examining feminism, motherhood, and California's contested landscapes. Denise was part of Chapman University's Getty Pacific Standard Time LA/LA initiative curatorial team and co-curated an exhibition of Orange, CA muralist, Emigdio Vasquez' easel paintings paired with works by contemporary artists in Fall 2017. She has written for Make/Shift and Punk & Post-Punk magazines.

Julie Shafer is an Associate Professor of Photography at Chapman University. They earned their BA in Art at UC Irvine and an MFA from the University of Southern California.

Julie teaches all facets of black-and-white and digital photography, including courses on experimental techniques. In addition to Chapman University, Julie has taught at Cypress College, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton, and Chaffey College.

Julie's work has been included in a number of exhibitions including: In the Sunshine of Neglect at the California Museum of Photography, Riverside; sites of build up, sites to mine at Glassell Gallery, Baton Rouge, LA; C.O.L.A. 2018 Individual Artist Fellowship, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery; Conduction, Fellows of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; The Gildless Age, Torrance Art Museum; Altered Land, University of Wisconsin Art Gallery; !Digá me!, Casa Colonial, Oaxaca, Mexico; and Convergence, Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego, CA (in collaboration with the National Park Service).
